				time to do brakes

alright so its time to do the brakes all around on my 94..after looking at what my store(napa) sells, i am not to pleased with the stock stuff. so looking to put the brakes from the 98-02's on. as far as i know the fronts switch right over( or do i need the knuckle for the 98-02). the backs i need to switch the backing plates so the calipers will bolt up? if its just the backing plates i need, does anyone have any laying around? im gonna get all new pads, rotors, calipers, hoses, cables and switch to DOT5.1 non silcone fluid from the job.

pretty much just seeing who else has done this and if anyone has the backing plates and front knuckles(if needed)

thanks

You need the spindles from a 98-02 car along with longer brake lines since the stockers will be a little short. I wouldn't bother with the rear brakes but its up to you.

I replaced all the soft lines with braided stainless including C5 front lines which provide the added length needed.

There are usually for sale ads for all the stuff needed to complete the swap.

the only reason i was thinking the rears as well is because of the crapy e-brake setup and the pads i sell for my stock set up and completely worthless and thin. back when my dad owned the car we did the rear pads(bout 7yrs ago) and never did the fronts. he bought the car in 99 and only put 24K in 12yrs on the vehicle. the backs are now squeeling( from the lil wear tab on it).

i just dont like the whole set up on the back

not dot 5, dot 5.1. dot 5 is a silicone brake fluid, 5.1 is not. 5.1 is designed for high heat and heavy duty abs systems

And its more susceptible to moisture intrusion? I dono, unless you are racing hard I don't see a reason for it.

is this a DD or a track car? If a DD I'd stick with the DOT GM recormmmends. But you are right 5.1 is ok, not 5. 5 is show car/museum stuff.

DD with strip and autoX use. nothing major. i was thinking 5.1 just so i dont have to worry bout it overheating, siezing calipers and not to give out when i got to stop from 120mph + on the street.

really just looking for where to get the backing plates and knuckles. will the knuckles off a 98-02 V6 work? if so i know the junkyard down the street has one

97-04 Corvette lines are what you want for the front.

If you wanted to go with the LS1-style internal drum parking brake set up, you will need to get an rear out of an LS1.

Stick to DOT3, you aren't going to do much with an active ABS system that will control the pressure to each individual wheel. They do make Synthetic DOT3 which has a higher boiling point, but again...not going to see that unless you are running 300+ laps at top speed, over and over again.

You need the backing plates pressed onto the axles, not the whole rear.

As far as i know you do not have to switch the rear. Blacdout96 has the internal drum parking brake on his fast v6 and has had no problems at all and the e-brake does work. i can see that having to do with something with the traction control, but i dont have that nor want it

Like I said, its the backing plates that bolt to the axle tubes and are pressed on the rear axles.

Wait, I'm thinking about aftermarket rears with positive retention. Just have to pull the axles then and swap mounts.

Would figure it was a lot easier to just buy rear than pull axles and do that whole song and dance.
