***read this if you use paypal important***

Not sure if this belongs here but best place I could think to put it and feel like I need to share this with.
Tuesday I recieved a call from my bank asking me about a few suspicious charges from Egypt. Long story short they concluded I was a victim of identity theft. The next day I get a call from the bank again saying that a company that deals with def and mute people were trying to make a transaction on my behalf. Luckily the person that took the call knew me my hole life and new I was able to hear and speak and denied them the transaction. The worse part is they had my social security #, Address, all bank accounts, full name, basically everything about my whole life. Bad news is the bank found out it was from PAYPAL. Apparently paypal is one of the easiest websites to hack info from.

The point is please be carefully how you use paypal. This has been a huge pain to deal with and hope none of you have to do it ever.
My bank told me a wise thing to do is use a separate "dummy" account for paypal only and just keep the minimum in it until you need to use paypal and then transfer the needed funds from your main account to the dummy account and than use paypal. She told me that's is.becoming very common and the safest way to use paypal if their is no other option.

I just wanted to share the warnings and info with all you guys and girls so maybe you can avoid it. Believe me this sucks. Because they have my social, and I work in law enforcement I actually had to inform my internal affairs dept in case some one ever gets arrested and trys to use my identity. If they were to do that and I didn't report it I could have lost my job temperarily until it was all worked out which could have taken months. Mean while I could have lost my house and not been able to feed my family during the long process of proving my innocense.
SO PLEASE USE PAYPAL WISELY AND AS SAID BEFORE I HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE AVOID THIS GIANT HEADACHE AND INCONVENIENCE...

Paypal is nowhere near as secure and safe as people think it is. I still can't believe that the Home Depot takes Paypal as payment.

yeah I had one response on ls1tech that a guy uses his card too and then deletes it whenever hes done using it and just adds the card whenever he uses it.. That seems like the best way to do it if you ask me...

Did you have your bank account number and all that on your paypal or just the numbers from a bank card?

I would suggest getting a second passcode keycard. I have one for my paypal and while its annoying to press a button for the next code, I feel better knowing that it likely blocks 99% of potential threats to get into my account.

It's called the security key. Basically you have to press the card to get a new key, each time you want to sign on. Now this would not prevent someone from getting the information if they hack into the system but this should keep most out of your account even if they have a tracker or obtain your basic login info.

So you use the card style? What's your opinion on the text message style?

I use the card style. I like to limit the amount of information sent over various devices. The card is kept in a safe place and knock on wood, has been working for a few years without an issue.

That's neat, I'm going to look into that. Thanks for the info.

Good move. Especially since places like Verisign get hacked. And don't tell people for, say, 2 years.

Nice, it's like a Crypto-Card or RSA fob setup.
