Freakin' GM and their crappy recall fixes

So I've heard that there is a known timing chain issue on my 09 CTS and I've been thinking of taking the car in to have the chain replaced. I have a connection with a dealership that will do it for me under warranty. Car only has about 25k on it.

This week I got a letter in the mail from Cadillac addressing the problem. What is their fix for a weak timing chain setup? More frequent oil changes! They will reprogram your computer to have the oil life meter run out quicker...free of charge.

What a joke!!

If the dealership is Flemington...keep both eyes open.

They botched the GTP valve cover recall for me, and others have had similar experiences with sub par work.

That recall is to recalibrate the Oil Life Monitor. We had people going 12-15k between oil changes and the oil life monitor was still above 25%. Most of our regular customers ignore the oil life and just get it changed every 3-5k miles. IMO the recall was more to address the idiots that don't even check their oil but then get angry when something goes wrong. GM's "acceptable" oil consumption level is ~1.5qts every 3k miles. If someone goes 15k miles with the max "acceptable" oil consumption that would be 7.5 qts the 3.6l only takes 6qts.

If you can get it done I would do it before you go out of warranty. I've done a few and they are not that bad. From what I've heard they are trashing the 3.6 and redesigning it.

When I sat down with them last year in Detroit, they said they had a supplier issue and that the chains were being replaced with revised guides or something like that. Steve was in the room with me.
