do it right the first time
i just want everyone to not do what i did because im really kicking myself in the ass
first my slave went so i changed it within the day as its my dd an needed to go to school
a week later the pilot went out even though it looked decent the week before
back to replacing that in some hours but then a month went by and the slave didnt come with throw out bearing so guess what happened 3 weeks later
growling at me every time i went to shift son of a betch
this time i ordered a newer slave to replace the quick napa replacement and a throw out bearing with the 01+ gm slave a t/o bearing
all this money in labor could of bought everything mcloed the first time
but im in school so i learn the hardway im going to do rhis one myself on saturday
so friendly reminder when you have the trans out do everything not one thing at a time like me
but im hard headed so thats my way of learning
also blew the hydraulic line got a fairly new one pretty quick from a camaro owner out in clifton his name is rich he has a pewter lifter rear dropped front maro he's saved me a few times many thanks to him
so what have you guys learned the hard way
maybe this should be moved to general?

I agree, if your going to go through all the trouble to take the thing apart you might as well do it all while your in there, because sooner or later something else is going to rear its ugly head.

Glad you learned a lesson, sorry for your unfortunate luck.
Whenever I have something apart I usually replace almost everything that can crap out.

I did a t56 swap, figured a cheap clutch would get me by for a few years. I bought an advance auto "perfection" slave cylinder and clutch. I blew the clutch to smithereens within 6 months, put it back together and the slave took a dump within the next 6 months. Then a week after the new slave I went to bleed it and the socket fell off in the bellhousing. Now I can't stand my new clutch any more because it's so stiff (I really don't know what is making it stiff, but going to try a new clutch and see what happens) so I'm going to end up having this freaking transmission out for the 5th time in two years.

tell me about it except i did it 3 times in a few months but i have to say the more you do it the faster you get at doing it lol

i'm guessing you don't have the time to drop the trans, but like you, I'm in school so funds are tight and I prefer to do everything myself. I can drop the trans out of my car within a couple hours(maybe 4 hrs tops). The real lesson is, if you're capable, do the work yourself

Yeah if you can do it yourself its a real money saver. Only issue is when you know its not going to happen overnight or you don't really have the time to mess with it. While I'm rebuilding the Trans Am from the ground up, the daily I sometimes have the local mechanic do some things for me just because it doesn't turn into a 2 week project due to weather or something. Next up on the daily is the timing belt, the mechanic will do that. I'm more than capable of doing that job, but weather and no air tools or lift make what should be an easy job a lot harder. On the bright side, I have CV shaft changes down to an hour and a half per side no air tools.

Yup, that too. I'll do brakes, suspension, and some accessory work myself but if it's a DD to get to work with an engine or trans issue I'll leave it to a pro.

Yeah don't ever buy a cheap clutch for a car you want to beat on. I was a fan of dumping the clutch to make u-turns in my Formula. First time at the track the clutch blew apart. Ended up being an $80 auto zone clutch lol.

Back in my LT1 days I obliterated the clutch, dropped trans, installed new clutch, got it back together and.... blew the slave, removed slave, replaced slave and.... snapped the clutch fork. I had the damn thing apart so many times that I could completely R&R the transmission in an afternoon in my parent's driveway.

I learned that periods help with knowing when the sentence stops in a long post.
I've lalso learned to check all your parts instead of relying on the parts warehouse. Waited 2 years to put on my Bilsteins, and had all new parts to go with it, but when I went to install I realized they gave me two right hand side strut bearing plates, and had to put the car all back together and wait to get a new one. I ordered the bearing plates along with the Bilsteins, so I had two years to look at them, d'oh!

A stock 10-bolt won't last in a 6 speed car. you sir are not alone. the 10 bolt housing will last...if you stuff it with better stuff
