Fancy Hardware

I'm still a little kid and fascinated with shiny object.

First inquiry:

Polished/Stainless/Chromed Coil pack/bracket bolts

I found these via LS1Tech, but the Allen heads are a big turn off. Where can I get them with a regular hex head?

I'd stick with the allen stuff, personally. Easy to remove.

If you have GOT to have hex, get the thread pitch and length and go to Fastenal. They can hook you up with whatever you need.

Enlighten me. I've never dealt with them. How is it any better/easier than using a hex head socket & bolt?

I also like boltdepot.com . McMaster is in NJ though so standard shipping should get you the product the next day, or you can pick it up will-call. The only problem with McMaster is you have to buy a minimum quantity. There is also Fastenal, have many locations in NJ or Ace Hardware.

If you want hex head I bought a bag of the bolts for the coils already in stainless, I can bring them to the Feb meet. If you buy me this Ill give you the bolts for free . I didnt get washers though, I like those close washers under those Allen head. Now that I see that I like it a lot more than the hex head too

I've called and ordered $5 worth of hardware before. Never heard of a minimum.

I only use the online ordering. I mean that you have to buy 10 bolts or what ever, I guess I should have said there is a minimum quantity of hardware usually, whereas at Boltdepot.com I can order one fastener if I like

I would go with the allens as well. The coils and brackets see so little torque that they aren't going to be an issue removing down the road and stripping.

I would say 50% of the bolts I deal with on BMWs are torx and allens

that is also 6.49$ towards a fantastic paint job or some Fiske...... lol or rent hahaha

Maybe. Worst case it'll be a nice driveway ornament.

How's the turbo build coming along?

Looks cleaner, tensile strength is 180,000 psi for common allens, easier to put in/take out and harder to strip in certain applications, can use a ball allen wrench in wacky spots that are otherwise inaccessible.

Aerospace uses em, therefore you should to.

And you can get the safety wire variants and never have head bolts back out!

Well I am talking generator/PCU/CV/GCU etc type of units, all my stuff calls for allen head, NAS1351 etc. In terms of smaller torque applications, its a lot easier and allows you to minimize the size of units.

Also prevents installers from using a 3/8 ratchet on things they shouldn't

Just make sure u dnt use allen heads where they need to be torqued down good. Reason be is u can strip the head or break the allen key which ive done plenty of times.

If it's a 3/8-16 bolt @ Grade 8, 50 lb-ft is as high as you should go. Most applications are in the 30-40 lb-ft range.
