Uhh stuff loads in Registry that you may not see running or in start up.... also Firefox is not immune to adware or spyware and just because you dont click on something doesnt mean you didnt get something pushed from a website that you dont want on your computer, ever heard of a cookie? They can do bad things when they are from a 3rd party that you dont even realize are displayed.....

I think in this day and age you dont really even need an anti virus program. You really need to worry about malicious scripts and pop ups from browsing. I only run an anti spyware/malware program, although it does look for certian virus'.
I know how to internet for the most part and I dont get anything so a lot of it has to do with eduwacasion.

People hear vires this and virus that on the news because it is such a generic term for PC's now a days and dont realize where the real threats come from IMO
IMO of course...Considering the fact that over 30 new viruses popup every day, some come via email, some via webpages...some from that shareware that was "free"...isn't malicious script still considered a Virus(malicious code)...I def recommend a good antivirus program for anybody, I have actually never heard anyone say they don't use one so that's a new one on me. Can I have your IP address, haha

or just buy a Mac
that doesnt cut it anymore, you can get a virus just by searching "New Jersey F-Body Owners Association" now... best free Antivirus imo nowadays is Avast Home... free yearly subscriptions and it has never failed me once

ESET FTW.
Macs don't get viruses because anything you install on a mac it asks your permission first. Microsoft has way too many security problems that's why there are so many viruses for it.
Britt just throw your Acer out that's your #1 problem right there. lol

I don't know Macs that well, but am taking some refresher courses for it...Im not trying to start a pissing contest on here, just putting out my observations based from my experience.

The military uses Microsoft products and they have hundreds of attempts into their systems on any given month with very little to no success...my point here is that a well configured Microsoft system is just as much of a nightmare for hackers as any MAC system can be. The reason there are so many more viruses for Microsoft is because that even now more people still use Microsoft vs. Mac.

Microsoft usually releases Service Packs to increase the efficiency of their OS and to patch security holes that are found in the OS after release, if the automatic update feature is used, many software issues are usually worked out.

I don't think I would necessarily throw out my computer because it has a software bug, that seems a little extreme. I would prob just ask a friend who goes to school for computer science or IT to take a look at it, who knows they might be able to make it run more efficiently too.

I am not going to go too much into detail but the people who say Macs are better than PC's just because of viruses are just speaking hearsay and generally have a low level knowledge of PC's let alone how viruses are programmed and how easily one can be written for the Mac OS. The fact of the matter is that the LARGE majority of people using computers are using Microsoft operating systems. (Something like 98%) Now if you were wanting to write a virus... who would you go for? the 98% or the 2%?... exactly. This argument just pisses me off when I hear it, being that I know how to program, and am currently working towards my certification in Security+ (which covers all types of computer security), and go to school for this type of stuff. It's just one of those situations where people talk and really don't know what they are talking about.

5.7TA, I agree with your statement about the Military and Microsoft. I just read an article where Microsoft just built a super secure version of XP for the Air Force ( i believe i have the right branch, i could be wrong). I don't know if there is any MAC usage in the Military, but I start my internship with the DoD on monday so I guess i can find out what type of systems they use.
