Just as easy, if not easier, than your normal SBC starter swap. If he gives you $10 to swap it you're still coming out ahead

X whatever. Piece of cake. Just bring both metric and standard sockets for the two bolts holding the starter to the block. One is metric, one is standard. Totally weird.

Tell him to join: www.jeepforum.com

The XJ (Cherokee) section has a pretty big group of people who should be able to help him out.

Sounds like on the electrical side, all you have left to check is whether or not you're getting spark. I believe the 4.0 still had a distributor in '96.

Is it getting fuel?

Yea, Check fuel and spark. Cherokee's didn't get the coil rail until 2000, so it's still got the dizzy.

obviosuly if the starter is turning the motor you didnt do it wrong. Other than that there is 100 things that could be wrong with it, like any other fuel injected car. I think im going to get a v8 ZJ next as an offroad/fun/poor weather/utility vehicle. My firebird or 924 cant hold much in the way of anything

Make sure to keep enough money set aside for rebuilding the transmission
