Rattle can paint
Has anyone gotten so sick of their bad paint that they've taken a few rattle cans to it? I'm nearing that point because I don't have enough saved yet for a proper paint job. How bad does it look with, say, flat black?
What about using a wagoner power painter? Tape everything off and just spray. How long does it last before noticable peeling happens?
Thanks!

As long as the body work is good i think flat black primer would look fine

I wouldn't paint a fence with a wagner.
Problem with most primer is it does not protect the car from moisture like paint. I believe epoxy primer will, but that ain't rattle can.
If you do it right, it should not peel, in theory. Given moisture. Duplicolor makes nice etch primer for bare metal, cheaper then eastwood. That stuff grabs metal good.
Don't do anything crazy like use POR15 on part syou plan on paiting one day, J-I-C you had that thought.
Wait till Harcode gets back from power tour.

Yeah I'm sure I can work with Paul on it. I just haven't saved enough money yet, and Frankensteins Monster is starting to get to me. Blue body, silver gfx, red aerowing, black interior, unpainted (dirty) wheels.... In other words, a 3rd gen.
When I have enough money I plan to go black with gold decals, so a flat black for now will at least keep me from cringing when I look at it.

If you want leave it bare you will need Epoxy or sealer or it will suck up water fast. Just be patient and get it done right the first time or you may end up having to strip the whole car, and nobody wants that.

Wasn't there a thread or discussion about using a roller? It was over a year ago folks were talking about that.
On a hot day, with the car baking in the sun and the wind low to non existant, maybe spraying it with a dozen cans of black will be enough for now. Sounds real ghetto, but I can't afford more right now.
Is it worth going over the black with some clear spray?

Does the car run, Dave? If so, a flat black rattle can job and a loud exhaust will put you in the "DON'T F**K WITH ME!!!" catagory!

If the car gods dont ***** on my next Saturday it should run and drive fine. I havent put the insurance back on it yet, or gotten the reg, or inspection, etc, so wont be driving it legally for a few more weeks (I hope).
Gonna price out the rattle can paint and see if its worth it. A real paint job is way in the future at this point.

Howz the body? If it is decent you might want to look into the Rustoleum/roller paint job. It seems to be more elbow grease than $ are needed.

Body is in good shape, with almost all of the rust removed now. I spot painted it a month or three ago, but havent filled in the spots yet for an even surface. I'm a complete noob when it comes to bodywork, which is also why I wasn't too worried about a rattle can job. I'm just looking for one common color for the car right now.

Awesome! Car is at Lackland Storage in Hillsborough, right off 206 near the Days Inn. I'm gonna be there all day working on it (with breaks for food and runs to autobone for missing items).

I'll see whats shakin', and maybe I can sch-wing by. IIRC, to get to Lackland, if I'm coming up Amwell from Millstone, I take a left on 206, then Lackland is further up on the left, correct? Also, check yer PM.

only issue with a spray bomb job on a car is that when you go to get it painted for real, you need to make sure you get all the spray paint off.
years back, i primed my 88 GTA with kylon sandable auto primer, then took it to macco for a 200 buck paint job. That was just to sell the car a month later so it did its job, i have no clue how its held up since then.

fix the body work, ill lend you my compressor and you can paint the car decent for under 100 bucks, google cheap auto paint, and you can find an article where some one used rusoleum put in a paint gun, and it looked better then the roll on. it was for a trail jeep.. but its better then a spray bomb

I had gotten an 1990 F-150 that was a a work truck. Its had some type of rack in the back for hauling pipes and ofcourse the tailgate was shot. However I fixed a fews areas on the hood and completed alot of the side panels as far as body work goes. Then I bought 12 cans of Ford silver paint and went to town. The truck was grey to begin with. In some areas it was rough but all in all the silver was a good choice.
But I'll never do that again

I sprayed my subframe with rustoleum professional gloss black in an HVLP gun. It turned out great.
