Should I keep working on this? or scrap it and start over?

I had started building a portfolio site a few years ago, and I just found all the files for it and uploaded it. I'm not sure if it looks dated or not, none of the links work so dont bother clicking them but see what you think.. should i keep going with this idea? or scrap it and do somehting else?

The page is a little devoid of content - lots of maroon background that gives the page a dark feel. I do like the maroon though because its a nice departure from all the black and white backgrounds out there.

Are you planning to diversify the mediums / categories, or are the videos, webdesign, etc. just a random collection of your talents? If you do plan to diversify, maybe make it easier on the surfer to find the category he/she wants by actually listing each category above the example. I know the names pop up when you hover, however my experience over the last 12 years in the business world is to make things stupid-obvious, simple because "cleaver" is lost on everyone but college students who have time to scan the whole web page.

Lastly, remember the marketing 101 lesson for all webpages: a persons eye scans left to right, then top to bottom. Whatever you want the viewer to see right away should be on your top left. I'm not saying what you have is wrong, just a reminder of how best to lay out the content of your page.

Good luck!

See? It WAS a good idea!

Captain Obvious, I am not. My eyes skipped right over them, dismissing them as every other menu out there.

the fact that your eyes skipped right over them yet you thought they needed to be there is a bigger problem.. how do i solve THAT?

Like most, probably, my eyes were immediately drawn to the images on the page, since they dominate the center of the webpage. Seeing the white words across the top, in peripheral vision, looks like every other menu choice on the top of business webpages. It may just be my failure.

Maybe your standard menu selection in its place, or down the left side, with the titles in some obvious color and font over each picture.

Home, About, News, etc... are easy to overlook since everyone has those, and they are usually in black or white to denote a typical menu choice. Make the category names pop in some way, unless the images are the most important to you and your site navigation.

This is all opinion of course. I look at things from a business perspective, which may or may not be advantageous for you. Hopefully others can chime in and give a different perspective so you can choose the bits and pieces that seem to make the most sense for your audience.

Good luck!

I would move the names down so that they are further away from your name and closer to the images. That way they will look less like part of a generic menu header and more like they are associated with the images.

Bikini girls?

J/K. It is a hair dark. I really like the overall feel of it. Those words across the top shoud be hot links, and the mouse over event for illustrations no workie. But in general I really like it, nice!
