Puzzled

First off, spring break is never kind to my cars.. last year on spring break I was rear-ended in my white V6. It didn’t happen this time but I have no idea what my car is doing.

Driving home yesterday (local road, not beating on it) the tach suddenly spiked to ~6k and I had no power, to anything. I coasted off the road to the shoulder and tried to start it, the same thing happened… the car would try to start but once it did the tach would skyrocket and the car would shut off (in a matter of ½ second)

I had the car towed to a local shop a few of my friends work at but they didn’t have time to look at it yesterday. I got a text this morning from my friend saying the car had started fine for them. About 2 hours later I got another text saying they just experienced the same problem I had. Anyone have a clue what’s wrong?

If it's just the gauge and not the engine revving up I'd say some sort of electrical short in the dash or the ignition switch areas.....could be a tough one to track down though.
