Have never been to Sicily, I would like to first see Sardina where some of my family is from, then back to the main land and see the other side of the family.

Never been there but I want to since that's where my mom's side of the family is from. I'm scared to go though, I might not want to come home if I go.
I assume you're going to Palermo?

You're going with school = doesn't matter what the drinking age is.
They find out you're screwed

i've never been to sicily, but i did two weeks in portico di caserta in '95. we went as far north as florence, saw rome, the sistene chapel, st peter's courtyard, one of the active archaelogical digs near naples, pompei, naples, capri (the boat ride over was amazing), and we visited a lot of her (the girlfriend at the time) family all over central italy.
one thing you will be amazed at (or should be) is the amount of time some of the structures have been around. our country is just a little over 200 years old, and some of the structure you will see will be five times that much.
pay attention and i am sure you will learn quite a bit. their drinking age isn't really enforced, so as long as you carry yourself well you'll get served. be careful, though, as their alcohol content can be quite a bit more than our beverages. 2 beers and you'll feel buzzed. more than that and you might cross the barrier (don't get smashed).
many parts of the country are very laid back, but i wonder how sicily is compared to the other regions. you know the mafia started there, right? and they just got rid of the capo de tutti capos a few years ago. be careful with your money and don't wear jewelry or expensive 'designer' clothing, as that might label you as a 'mark'. be careful and have fun.

Thanks for the concern, I'm not wearing any of my jewlery and I bought this thing from target called the money belt. It goes under your shirt around your waist like a fanny pack , but very tight to the body.

Cooper: What the hell is that?
Jamie: It's a traveler's money belt. Frommer's says if you have one of these, no-one can rob you of anything.
Scott: Except your dignity.
Jamie: No, you just put that in your... wait, what?

Sicily is fun, but watch out, there is A LOT of street crime there. I almost got robbed in Palermo, and a crew from a container ship tried to kidnap my friend and I at the docks. The countryside away from the city is really nice and the small shops and restaurants are great. One thing thats a strange attraction about 45 minutes outside Palermo is a museum of preserved corpses, including a little girl. It was all done by some guy like 150 years ago. Pretty creepy, because most of them are just propped up on benches and in chairs with no glass around them or ropes so you can get right up close to them.

Think about all the tourists you see in Manhattan and inwardly think that they're easy marks for a local.
Now put yourself in Italy and think about what the locals are thinking.
Enjoy the trip, but always be wary. NEVER go anywhere alone - small groups are better than pairs. Take lots of pictures, but don't flash any cash. You're better off paying for things with credit card if possible. People watch to see the wad of cash you pull out before you leave the store / restaurant / etc.
In Rome, we had a backpack slit open while on a bus, our pockets constantly "bumped" while on the subway, and kids running around us trying to sell everything they had, including each other (I'm not kidding - especially the older brothers with younger sisters).
Stick with the group and enjoy the trip. You'll bring back plenty of great memories and a few lessons learned.
