Our last 3 gas and electric bills were around $100 a month. In the winter it jumpes up a little to around $150-175. But we don't use a whole lot of heat and no AC so you can't compare. An oil bill should be to fill the tank and not really reflect a month of activity.

 | If you have a contract that is totally possible since many of them put you on a budget.

I just switched from oil to gas back in Nov. VERY glad I did.

Saves me MUCH more than I was spending in oil. Electric prices aren't going up like regular fuels are. Plus I get a discount thru the elec company if I upgrade the remaining appliances to 'energy star compliant' pieces....so I'll stick to what I got and save what I'm saving.....

Plus the cost of the upgrade isn't too bad considering what a new oil boiler was going to run me. $3500 vs $5000 minimum.....plus I can scrap all the pipes and boiler.

Scrap FTW
And honestly, the house no longer STINKS of oil....digital thermostat upgrades will only save me that much more....so I'm still ahead with room to go further (like insulating the walls and attic) |

Yeah, pop's is looking to get all new windows in the house, as well as install new roof and siding. We are also gunna look for insulation to put in the attic space to keep down the energy. Our electric bill went down 50% from last year, and my father thinks its related to the fact that every light in the house is now the halogen light bulbs. I know I know, mercury...but 50% is awesome.

Since we bought the house we've put in new double pain vinyl windows, new vinyl siding with an extra layer of foam insulation over the old siding and new shingles with ridge vents and soffet vents. We still need to get a new furnace and central AC setup because ours are original to the house. But I never have spare cash for getting that done. If the 70 sells, I will hold some money for the upgrade this fall.

I think the way its going right now, I'm very lucky that my rent includes heat and hot water. It's about average NJ rent at 973/month, but imagine what I'm saving on oil.
