how do junkyards make money?

i was just thinking about this recently but i was just wondering....how do junkyards make money? last month i bought a window regulator plus a motor from absolute junkyard in bound brook, they used a paint pen and wrote the date on the motor.

heres the deal though, i installed it and it works, but my old one is sitting around...i wanted to know whats stopping me, or anyone for that matter of taking the broken one and marking it with a paint pen the same way the dude there did and returning it for your money back? im not trying to rip anybody off i was just pondering...

DO junkyards allow you take something back? I mean, you did buy it used from a junk yard with no guarantee that it will work.

no it was a 30 day warranty...it expires on 8/20. absolute has a 30 day return policy if it doesnt work. its a window motor theres always a possibility that it doesnt work

I think they buy their hulks/junk for very cheap and they can recoup the money pretty fast. There is nothing stopping you from doing that.

Places like Home Depot require photo IDs when doing a cash return so people can't buy a TV and return a box with a cinder block in it (subtle movie reference here)for that very reason.

The junkyards around here don't give cash refunds on bad parts, they just mark with a paint pen, give you a receipt, and let you exchange it for another one if the one you have is bad.

My dad used to own a junk yard. The pens are special paint. I actually have a box of them that I use for marking up parts for cutting. Plus they mark them special marks. You probably could duplicate the marks, but the money isn't made on $35 regulators. Engines, Transmissions, window glass and body panels are the big bucks. Plus they pick up cars for a few hundred dollars. There were some Jettas and Corollas that he would pick up for $400 and sell over $4000 worth of parts off of them. They would go to scrap as empty shells.

im going to go ahead and assume anybody that would give up a wrecked 4th gen like that is an idiot to give it all up for $500, if the interior was leather you could at least get 500 for that alone

yea but once a insurance company totals a car it theirs to do with as they see fit. sometimes you can keep the car as part of the settlement but usually it goes to scrap or sold at auction fixed registered in Penn.to take the salvage off the title and resold. scrap metal is through the roof now days with country's like India and china crying for raw materials like steel and aluminum

unfortunately some JY's are too overpriced on common parts and are clueless to more important parts. Example: I went to GI on 46 with JM a couple months ago just to look around I forget what for and I spotted a blue 91/92 Camaro RS. Long story short what they wanted for the tail lights was a little more than what we would pay anywhere else and they dropped the car with no wheels/tires so ALL the aero style GFX were ruined. They probably could have sold a complete GFX kit for what they paid for the car.

yes ted i agree alot of places overcharge for the common parts and ruin the others. it would be better if you can bargain with them over there but most of the time they really dont let you do that

Bring big pockets and know how to speak Spanish. Thats the key to the u-pick junkyards, especially GI on 46.
