So all I have to do is have him sign over then title to me then register it when I get home? I can drive it without it being registered?

Congrats on the car. Topless is my new love of driving. Frame conn. are a big help on the verts. You need to be registered and insured in NJ big trouble without.

as soon as he signs over the title call your insurance and add it grab a temp tag from NY DMV then drive home nj state law you have 20 days to get it titled/registered after bill of sale.
I've done this with 4 cars as of now

shift kit, corvette servos, and 3300 stall - makes all the difference. Had that in my 93 TA (700 R4)

Headers, exhaust and a Cool Air would be a good start....

Also I hated the opti spark and converted over to coil packs.... well worth the money even though it is expensive, even though I went through 3 opti sparks...

also Electric Water pump. (also pricey but well worth the money)

this is wrong. if you drive an unregistered vehicle on NJ roads and a cop sees you, he will issue a ticket for unregitered vehicle.

after you have registered the vehicle, you have 20 days to get it inspected.

is the transaction complete? did you give the guy the money? if so, have him mail you the title. get insurance. then take the title to MVC, to flip the title and get plates for the car. no plates == no registration == ticket.

now, i don't recommend this, since it's illegal, but i have used a spare set of plates to transport a vehicle home. this can net the same result as above in addition to 'fictitious plates', just so you know going in what the penalty could be. oh, and i always use a chase car that stays behind me (close, but not tailgating) on the trip home. that will typically keep the cops off your butt and keep you out of trouble.

but the best course of action is to get the title flipped and get it registered properly. no headaches that way.

Yeah what Jim said, and ask that the title be shipped via UPS or registered mail. Less likely some schmuck in the post office will take the title and show up three months later claiming the car is his, with title in hand.

Just grab a set of plates from the junkyard that match the NY state inspection, slap them on, and drive home in a calm and reasonable fashion.

I have moved cars with borrowed/out of date plates a few times and never got hassled. Just don't make a scene and they won't ever look at you.
