which gym do you go to
which gym do you go to and why do you choose that gym over any other gym.
i recently got caught sneaking into nysc (best bud is a personal trainer there and let me in) and am on the prowl for a new gym. i loved nysc but its pricey, i tried retro fitness out today in north brunswick and it sucked big time. they have a movie theatre playing STAR WARS but dont have a weighted pull up belt? i go to the gym at my university but im there 4 days a week, and most of the time cant lift on school days due to my work schedule.
im going to do trials of WoW, la fitness, and anytime fitness (idk if thats just local to me or what but i havent heard of any others). just give me some input on gyms youve been to...id greatly appreciate it. thanks.

My advice is to try a local gym, and make sure you tell them you are a student, you usually get a discounted rate. The one I go to has just as nice of equipment as Golds/etc, but is about half the price. And is much less crowded. Yeah, I can't go after 10 pm, but how often does one really do that?

Gyms I've been to:
Olympus gym on Rt 23- I love it. It feels like a gym should. Great prices, enough equipment and if you go during off hours, its damn near empty. The weights and equipment is kinda dated, but everything works.
Reps in West Milford- Nice little place, but the prices are outrageous. Mostly new equipment.
Spa 23 on Rt. 23- Hated it. It didn't feel right. I felt like I didn't belong there, it was almost too nice. Trainers would come up to you and ask if you needed anything, which annoyed the crap out of me. Lots of equipment, all of it new. Price is very high, but you get a lot for it.
This should properly be in the Regional forum.

I was going to my local YMCA's extra gym but they wanted a crazy amount for 4 months minimum. I just started going to a local gym Rocco's in my town. I work and go to school till about 8 or 9 most days of the week so when I get down to this gym its usually empty save for a few juicers staring at themselves in the mirror. Their equipments alright, the YMCA had all brand new stuff which was real nice.

Mom & Pop, which is why I said "local" gym. Probably your best bet. I know it's half the price of gold's, most i've seen is like 1/5 of the machines used at once. And they're all newish machines.

I use to go to Planet fitness when I lived in nc. 10 bucks a month month to month low start up fee down right basic gym, everything you need to work out and workout right, pay 20 a month get tanning and massage chair usage. Nothing fancy but also not a sh!thole. They have a few locations in Jersey depending on your location and opening more up too.Open 24 hours too which I use to LOVe because I would get home late form work and be able to work out any time I wanted!
Also theirs a gym in Perth Amboy (dont know how far that is from ya) that is running a special 100 bucks for 4 months. no start up fee or anything heard its pretty damn nice to pretty big size gym but not a retro and not a mom and pop gym. Ill get more info on them if you want.

Best bet here as far as LA fitness. I used to work there and they try to wring you out. I paid a lil more for my join fee, but my monthly is only $35. Friends joined and got an even better price, AND got kids club thrown in free (3 kids).

Funny someone posted this. I just joined the Retro Fitness gym in Piscataway with my friend today. It is a real nice gym with a lot of different equipment. I am not sure how the Retro Fitness was where you went, but the one is Piscataway is pretty nice. Free tanning bed, and personal trainer. $20 a month, locked in for a year's committment. The enrollment fee was split in half when I joined with my friend. Nice place though. They clean down all of the equipment and there are some hot girls that work out there too. It gets crowded around 6-8 PM, but otherwise, it is good. It is right next door to the building I work at, so I go there right after work.
Good music playing, lots of equipment, and friendly staff. What didn't you like about the Retro Fitness you went to?
I talked to one of the trainer's who worked at the LA Fitness in South Plainfield by the Middlesex Mall, and he told me that a lot of people from LA Fitness left to come to Retro because LA Fitness got too packed.

i went to the retro in north brunswick, im used to going to a nysc maybe thats why i didnt like this one, but it just didnt strike me as a gym that took lifting seriously, the cardio machines were all pretty and new and stuff, but the benches, free weights, power racks (all the stuff that matters to me) were all cluttered and hard to get around. most of the iso machines i can max out at. maybe ill give the one you are talking about in piscataway a shot, maybe they are different.

Well, I should forewarn you before you sign and make anything official with the Retro in Piscataway. I mean they do get their somewhat crowded hours during the week. But it is never crowded in such a way that you have to wait really long to use something.
Now the one I go to in Piscataway will usually have girls in their late teens to mid 20s working out there. I mean there are always a hand full that utilize the cardio and leg machines and floor mats for crunches. There will always be more guys than girls there, but you get all walks of life. People in their 30s-even 60s. The music is good though. They play movies in a room, and most of the treadmills have personal TVs on them. There are plenty of dumbells and barbells to lift with. I mean part of the reason why it is somewhat cheap is because they don't have a pool or basketball or raquet ball courts and things of that nature. But they keep it clean. It is nice for me since I work right next door and could walk over there right after work.
I have found it to be the busiest anytime after 5:30 PM, when most people have gotten out of work and make their way there. But I was just there tonight (Friday) and it was pretty empty, which was nice. For that reason, I would save arms and back for Fridays. I mean sooner or later gyms do get a crowd, but I have yet to experience a ridiculous wait time to use any equipment. Most people there are friendlyand don't hog things. And if they do, just ask an employee to ask the guy to give the equipment a rest. I think they have a policy on that anyway.
Also bare this in mind, it is January and a lot of people get new gym memberships in hopes for looking good for summer or for keeping a New Years resolution. I would be very surprised if the people that are currently going to the one I go to will be there in the next few months. Many people have a tough time sticking to a routine.
