Cam Thoughts

I am going to be needing to pass emissions come June. Plan is to swap in a new more environmentally friendly cam and either leave it or just put back the old one in after the inspection. (I enjoy swapping cams) Question is, how do cam designers know what will pass emissions? Like is there a threshold where you can't go past or something? I know I could put in a proven off the shelf cam but I am kinda looking to spec something myself.

Thoughts?

-6 degrees overlap is pretty much the limit with a spot on tune. That drops you right underneath the 224 range on a 114 LSA with xe-r lobes.

Rumor on the tech is that someone passed emissions with the tr224. I can speculate that if its legit, it would be due to TR cam lobes being less aggressive than xe-r.

Max effort to pass emissions with your nature killer would prob be a 220/220 114LSA or a variation forward/reverse split. IMO I would come up with a forward split to get a little more up top since you already have a 3400 TC. Quickly looking at LT1 shelf cams, the 218/224 on a 114 would be nice and still have pretty good top end.

Luckily, you have an auto and it will run much better on a 114. Also, since you have LE2 heads, a smaller cam will produce great results given that you dont have to over-spec duration to battle stock flowing heads for more power.

I love my 107 LSA thank you very much, cept the state of NJ doesn't....

218/224 is really small, I would be getting **** from the heads....

114 I can see, but I think I could go to a 112 and still be ok...
And that stall may be coming out in the spring, I don't know yet, depending on budget etc.

Worst case, I buy a stock PCM, throw the stock cam back in and pass emissions.

218/224 is small but thats what it will take to pass emissions. If you're thinking budget, it would be cheaper to throw the old one back in. The only costs would be a pcm and fluids. I think your heads would be ok with a 218/224, but it would definitely overkill the stock cam.

Well if I were to throw the stock one in it would be just a matter of finding a stock tune with AIR/EGR tuned out, not that hard.

We can do this cam swap disaster to warm up for your cam swap.

Will you pass me?

Its got a lot of overlap, and a 107 LSA. So there is no way in hell I will pass. And I have the sudden urge to do things legally and or not complain about it. So I wanna make power and do it legit.

Im not 100% on a cam swap this summer, I still like the idea of full bolt-ons, stalled car. The H/C swap would be better after I graduate and get my life together so I can do it right the first time.

Well as of now, it depends on if I can start working towards the end of the semester. If I can make a decent amount, its built 355 with spray. If not, its cam swap time.
