so i needed to take a remedial math class to graduate...

and for the life of me i know i am making this answer way too difficult for this level of math, but its hard taking 8 steps backward in math...so i wanna know what you guys would put for this
"You transfer into a college with 60 credits. How long will it take you to graduate if you can only take 8 credits per semester? The number of credits needed to graduate is 128. Write an equation for the number of credits accumulated as a function of the number of semesters at the college."

Um... I'm not a math genius so If I'm wrong don't shoot me. Looks like you're solving for x. So:

60+8x=128
8x=68
x=8.5

no?

You're both right.

Well, you are wrong. And so is Matt. Tsar is correct.

Equations are written with an equals sign. The prefix "Equa-" denotes equality.

He would say

x= (128-60)/8

to be correct.

I wouldn't stress over it, it's something you can teach yourself in a day or two using google. I had to re learn all that stuff for asvab, ended up not needing it at all...

While we are on a subject on math, does anyone have any experience with Linear Algebra, Differential Equations with Applications, Physics I and II with Calculus, and how hard are Calc 1,2, and 3? I was thinking about taking some of those classes so I'm not bored.

I took all but DifEQ. I was a math minor in college.

Of those, I'd take Physics I+II and Linear Algebra. Those were the most "fun".

Interesting. The reason I was asking is because if I take those classes I will get another degree. But I'm not sure what I'm diving into here. Can one take Calc 1 with Physics I with Calculus, while taking linear algebra, followed by Calc 2 with Physics II with Calculus and DifEQ, and finishing up with Calc 3? Or do I have to take Calc 1 before I even attempt Physics 1 with calc and other. I guess I'm asking if those classes are all correlated somehow, and if I need prior knowledge in one to take another class or if I can learn them simultaneously.

I just thought of this yesterday night, so I'm still thinking about it.

Thanks

I don't see why you can't.. calc1/calc2 were more of theory classes than anything else. Calc3 sucks, and diffiQs was also kind of a theory course.

haha, its not so much needing a refresher, but its so difficult trying to take 18 steps backward because in the back of my mind i keep saying to myself 'it cant be this easy'

the only part i would think would be a prerequisite would be calc I to take calc II. there is no real relationship between calc and physics and/or differential equations. if you decide to double and triple up on the classes i can promise you that you won't be bored.

p.s. no trig? plane geometry? or have you done them already?

Um, Jim, if he is taking a calc based physics class, it would kinda be impertive for him to understand calc. And DiffiQ's is just calc 1 on crack.

well that question is 2 part. it wants the function to get the credits per semester... so f(x)=8x... meaning x is the number of semester you take...and since you get 8 credits per semester, the function is 8 times x. it then wants you to use that function to figure out how long it would take to finish. its simple math, but it wants you to figure it out using a function you create. i think youd get half or less credit if you just do it without involving a function...since the question seems to be aimed at your ability to think in terms of functions instead of stright up arithmetic.

so it would be (128-60)+f(x)=128 then (128-60)+8x=128... then 68+8x=128... 8x=68... x=8.5 semesters.

thats what i would write if i was given that question to ensure that i got credit for the questions as a whole.

My thoughts exactly. Calc will help in Physics.
