Built motor question

Well My 383 should be here tomorrow. I have a stock f-body oil pan for it. I also have a oil pickup and windage tray from the other stock block I bought. The question I have is that the stock block I bought a while ago had a spun rod bearing. Would you still use the oil pickup and windage trany from that motor on a built motor?

I dont know the cause behind the spun bearing but when I spun a bearing in my 98 firebird it was due to low oil pressure as my oil pump went out. Would a oil pickup or windage tray contribute to a spun bearing?

As cheap as oil pumps and pickups are, for a performance build I would replace them. I have had great luck with the Melling 10554 (standard volume/high pressure). The Melling Select line of pumps have a more robust casting than stock AND the popular M155 line of pumps. I wouldn't build a 383 without one, hence there being one in mine. Many guys DO reuse stock pumps on performance builds without a problem, but this is just my personal preference. Gil Davis Racing Engines of West Chester PA also suggested replacing the OEM pump with a Melling Select.

If you want to reuse that OEM pump, I would at least have it blueprinted and reconditioned.

Pickup tube and windage tray can be re-used. Cleaned thoroughly of course.
Replace the oil pump...

Agree with everything said above. And will add, do I search, when using a stock pump use a GM - White spring, its a very cheap way to add some protection to your new engine. I always hated the stock LT1s low oil pressure.

Already have a ported oil pump that came with the motor. The only parts that I was wonderring of using was the pickup and windage tray. This is also a LS1 383 build.

Is it a ported LS6? If so, your fine... Otherwise I would get a Melling unit if its just a stock ported.

So basically I just clean up the Pickup tube and Windage tray and install them if we dont see anything wrong with them?

Its a New Era Performance ported oil pump. They use the SLP Ported Oil Pumps.. The guy I got the motor from said it as 45 psi at idle and over 60 with your foot in the gas.

Jeff just make sure you clean the pickup tube really well, and that there is nothing in the sump screen. I hva e a ported ls6 pump in my car and ave about 60psi at idle and 80 when on the throttle I have pinned the gauge before.

When I found one for as cheap as I bought it for. Was just going to do H/C but plans change when you find built motors for a great price.

What heads is it getting?

For best power I would recommend a head that flows real well in the low lift for cyl filling on the small bore.

I have a set of ported LS6 heads.. The thing thats going to hold me back for a while is my LS6 intake untill I get a Fast 90-92 setup.. The guy I got the motor from said it made 480rwhp with a fast 90 setup and ported 5.3's.. I am looking for 440rwhp with my setup for now. If I can gain 100hp for less then 3200.00 into the motor and heads then I will be very happy with that..

Whats the flow #'s on the heads?

Also, I would have the machine shop do ARP rod bolts while they have the motor, JMHO...

Motor has ARP rod bolts already. However It doesnt have Main cap ARP Studs.. I have to get the flow sheet out of the car to tell you. I will post the numbers up later when we get back from my brothers house in Baltimore.

Stock Flow numbers on the 243's

Intake Stock

Lift/CFM .100/65.6 .200/138.1 .300/194.5 .400/234 .500/260.7 .600/269.6 .620/269.6

Intake After Bowl work and Deshroud work

Exhaust Stock

Lift/CFM .100/57.7 .200/104.5 .300/144.1 .400/170.6 .500/178.5 .600/184.8 .620/186.4

Exhaust After bowl work and Deshroud

Bought the heads for 450.00. They came with Patriot Dual Valve springs and have the Sodium filled valves.. The machine shop charged 440.00 for the bowl work and Deshrouding.. Not bad for a budget head job when the Patriot performance Stage II 243's flow just about the same as mine do but cost 1245.00 without shipping and dont come with the sodium filled valves..
