Hypothetical Race

Just curious what you guys think would win in a race 1/4 mile assuming same driver ability and all the crap.

A stock LT-1 F body Automatic. (My car)
A 78 Trans Am 400 C.I 4 speed with cam and open headers.

Didn't the late 70's 400 motors only make like 200HP? And judging by the hillbilly mods (cam and open headers on an otherwise stock engine) it probably makes LESS than stock horsepower... Probably runs high 15's at best.

the 78 is either 200 or 220hp, open headers on that car is junk, lost his low end, and the cam is more then likely too big for the motor, better find out the gear in the rear and what other sneaky mods he might have

I think it depends a lot on what's been done to the 400. The LT1 car should be a consistent low 13 or high 14 sec car. If the 400 still has the low compression it came out of the factory with, horsepower will be in the low 200s if it's tuned properly and running right. If it's running rich and timing is a little off, HP could be in the 180-190 range. No cam or exhaust will make power with crappy heads and 8.5:1 compression

Remember performance was crap in this era. Corvettes in this time period were 15 sec. cars stock

Depends. If he has an aftermarket intake, cam, carb, and exhaust and its got 3.xx gears he'd win.

Without knowing all the mods and how well each combo is matched up, there is no way to know whose car is faster. My 72 Skylark with a factory rating of 175hp went 13.6-13.7 in decent air consistently with just headers, intake/carb, mild cam, converter and gears on a Nitto d/r. In mid summer heat the slowest it went was 13.87, and that was a heavy full frame car with steel bumpers.

i agree with most of the above, if he has something that you don't know about he could theoretically beat you. just like how a TPI car with the right mods could beat you. sometimes it's more about wat you cant see. if its got a good set of gears, a cam and intake, i would be willing to bet it has a better set on pontiac heads on it, and if thats the case i don't think you have a chance in stock form

Don't forget exhaust. The stock exhaust on 1st and 2nd gen cars of both marques was pitiful. 2nd gens post 74 were worse as they had crappy exhaust manifolds into a tiny y-pipe followed by a low-flow pellet cat. 400 ci through a 2-2.25" single exhaust is pretty rough.

If I ever got that car, I'd bring it straight to the dealership and trade it for a lS1 T/A. No offense to the Burt Reynolds Bandit Guys.
