Want so bad....

The stars are aligning.....to piss me off. This guys in NJ, and has a complete Engine, and yet, do to certain circumstances, funds are low and I must back away....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cosworth-Veg...1d6b86&vxp=mtr

Another Cosworth Moment for me was last year when a complete rust free Cosworth was priced to move, or it was getting scrapped.....but was located in Arizona. I just happen to have a friend transporting cars driving by Scottsdale at the time, and yet my budget was just shy to grab it.....I hope it didn't see the inside of the car crusher...

Who else has come across something they wanted/needed, and it was either too good to be true, or it was just out of your reach?

You may not be able to polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter.

There is a Cosworth Vega parked in front of a Psychic's shop that I pass on my way to work. Funny thing is that I always see nice cars parked there. I've seen a Chevelle SS, a nice 90s Vette, a Ferrari 360, etc

Oh, and now that I'm in the process of getting my SRT4 I'm also finding other cars I like...I'm a sucker for a nice Taurus SHO...

Cosworth Vega is cool in a quirky way. Like a Ferrari 308 QV. Or dare I say a nice GN.

yes. but taking the drive train out of that and dropping it in an equally quirky car does not make it twice as interesting. Or maybe it does like looking at a car accident lol

YES UBG!!!! I love the intake setup on them, makes my head spin thinking of how to work on that. Seen one a few years back, dark green, stick, and guy wanted 3500, but I'm sure it was whooped and had it's fair share of problems.

I'm not going to start a fire here, but V8's aren't everything. I understand this is a Camaro/Fire Bird/ Corvette/ Murica, **** Yeah site, but that doesn't mean it has to be V8 or no way does it fly here. As you already know, I do enjoy road racing, and what would be more awesome then a 4 cylinder engine that was designed to produce 180hp stock in 1969?? ( although, due to emissions, it was reduced to 110HP when it came out) Rev around 6500 RPM, but can be built to withstand 8500 RPM with a few changes, and if built right, can support 240-260hp.....mind you, this is America's first DOHC engine, first electronic fuel injection, and was all aluminum. It's a Honda crusher engine from the states, AND is old school.

Then take an Opel GT, weighing less then 2100lbs. stock, and you have the recipe for a underdog road racing car, that can take on some of the best out there. Not quirky, intriguing. Same thing with an 88 Fiero GT, the suspension upgrade for that year made a night and day difference in handling.

Engines that made 400+ hp stock in 1969. 302s can turn 7-8000RPM stock.

That's 180 gross, too. Granted I like all the old road race stuff as well, but the engine is cool for being different, not for really setting any records. Wasn't it all aluminum with no liners, too?

Fixed lol. And how much do true DZ engines go for now a days? Yes you can do the 283 block/327 crank deal, but if were going to do engine info, might as well be factory engines.

A big part of the Cosworth appeal to me is the fact that the car itself was great for the times. Neutral handling, good stiffness, etc. Kind of like my buddy's '84 SVO.

The lack of cyl liners is a death sentence IMO. Would have to tear it open and have steel installed so I could drive it.

You can have a 302 without the need for a verified DZ. And that's being short sighted for all of the '67 and 68 Z's

Lol you're so eady to tweak.

I got nothing against 4 cylinders. I drive a turbo 4 everyday. That vega motor, while neat and ahead of it's time (well not really, but advanced for 70s gm think) is certainly not anything I'd want to spend anytime on. Flathead fords can go fast too but I wouldn't want one of them either.

If one must have that ancient engine with dubius reliability is your thing I'd leave it on the vega. Also a light car with a good suspension. what does putting it in an opel get you that the vega does not offer?

Absolutely correct, without cast iron liners, a cylinder bridge ( like what high horsepower honda's use) and a couple other goodies, they will literally split in half from the vibrations. Also, GM produced an HD block to correct that, but by the time it came out, GM ditched the Cozy Vega program, and scrapped thousands of regular complete cozy engines sitting in warehouses, and the HD blocks are worth their weight in gold.

600 lbs. difference stock. Cozy Vega is 2700 lbs. stock, Opel is 2100 with the 1.9 Litre, and in the teens with the 1.1 Litre engine and options missing.

Power to weight ratio

DZ 302 Camaro - 0.10 hp/lbs. ( w/ 400hp and 3,765 lbs.)
Opel/Cozy engine - 0.12 hp/lbs ( w 240hp and 1,900 lbs.)

I remember seeing a Cosworth Vega in a magazine years ago, and the owner had ditched the stock FI for some side draft Webers. Had all kinds of other mods, too. Pretty neat car from what I remember.

And to see a Vega now a days that hadn't rusted on the show room floor is just plain good.

I'd either do the Webers ( So sexy with velocity stack on them) or take a modern EFI system, like out of a Cobalt, and use that. Not sure if the computer would allow for 8500 RPM, but I'm sure there's a way around it.

3765 is heavy for a first gen Z. Official weight is somewhere around 3300.

There's a guy on Rt 22 in Lebanon who has an old Formula 5000 engine with Webers on it. Looks sweet as hell on the stand, but I'm sure it's tons of hours and dollars away from ever running again.

Shut the front door! What's the asking price for it? I would return that to museum quality, and sit it in my living room or man cave...

and 400/3300 is 0.12 ratio, same as the cozy
