Does the whole autonomous vehicle movement scare anyone else? I understand that the systems are pretty advanced but anyone driving down the road can already see that many drivers pay little to no attention to what they are doing. Now a car that is telling those already unattentive folks to pay even less attention to the road. Are people that can't pay attention already going to have the slightest clue that not all circumstances are ideal and that even with these advances lane departure and radar related cruise control do not in any way make the vehicle capable of emergency maneuvers or safe to rely upon under poor road conditions?

I would rather see advances in teaching people to drive and requiring retesting at specified intervals to keep a drivers license. An able operator is always the best safety feature.

*tin foil hat on*

I thoroughly anticipate the start of hackers being able to jack your car while you are driving, or a slew of other negative things that having this sort of technology will allow. Or even big brother saying that you speed and here is a ticket. Either way, scary stuff.

****ing skynet.

They are actually testing it on a stretch of highway out here in Michigan about 25 miles from me. My understanding is that it's basically the next generation of adaptive cruise control and the lane departure system. Now, it just controls the steering wheel. I've driven plenty of Chrysler vehicles with the adaptive cruise control and can say that the system works really well and it actually makes driving more enjoyable IMO.
