Insurance totals car... sell on eBay or part out?

My friend recently got into an accident with his firebird, and the insurance company totalled the car....

So, your opinions please, what will bring in more money:

Selling the car on eBay (listing it as an AS-IN totalled vehicle sale)...

-or-

Parting it out piece by piece?

What year is the car, how many miles on it, what's damaged, etc. is what we really need to know. Parting it out will usually make more $$ in the end, unless the entire body is destroyed.
I made a little over $3K parting out my old '85 SS. I kept the motor, trans, rear, and front suspension and sold off everything else. When that car was gone, it was just a body tub with doors, glass, and an empty frame. Nothing left on it. Here's a pic of how it looked before I was done.

When this shot was taken, some of the interior was still in the car, and you can see the trunklid and rear marker lights, as well as the brake booster/master cylinder and some other wiring. That all wound up in my garage and shed before she left.

part it out. salvage titles suck. the person buying it would most likely part it out, anyway, as no one wants to fix up a junked car nowadays. it's so much easier to part it out.

If he knows how to get it out of the driveway, defenitly part it out. You can make some nice cash off that. But it may just take time.

it's a 2001 Firebird, will all options.. chrome rims, leather interior, premium 10 speaker sound etc. etc., steering wheel controls, 36000 miles (give or take 2000, i can't remember).

I have yet to see the car, I might post pics later today... but from what I know, front end damage, and right fender cracked, car is not running and i believe it is just an electrical issue.

If I get ahold of an estimate of the actual damage i'll post that too so you guys can get a better idea.

its taken me a month to get over 2 grand off of my car...and still have the motor, tranny & every part ive ever bought for the car, linelocks, lid, lca's, diff cover, TC, shift kit, heads, cam, pulley...i did sell the exhaust system though but i didnt think id have a need for that for my s-10 swap but i couldve probably gotten 3-5k for the motor with the stock heads/cam swapped back in and had some heads & cam to sell later on.

i'm gonna make the same offer i made to foff667 (since we haven't met, and i haven't seen a direct reference to your name, i am drawing a blank - please forgive me ): if he can wait a coupla months, i will buy the whole car from him. if he's got to get rid of it now, then i won't be able to participate in the sale.

i have plans for the motor & computer, interior (dash, console, seats), transmission and computer, rear, brakes & computer, wheels and tires (although they are the least important to me). i would most likely part out the rest of the car. yeah, i know, what else is there? i don't have any need for any of the sheet metal.

i will pay $5000 for the car, but it won't be until at least february that i'd be able to complete the sale. ask if he thinks it's worth it to wait or just part it out. it would be even better if i could pay him for what i need and remove the stuff, leave him the carcass that he could continue to part out and get some dollahs for.

cars are worth a lot more money in pieces.
plus if he parts it he can always keep the drivetrain around for a future project.
later
