No...thats not what VTEC is designed to do. VTEC, (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) can advance the camshaft timing relitive to the crank shaft, improving top end performance.
Its not some hyrbid engine design that helps save you gas. It actualy uses more gas by basicly giving you a bigger camshaft at higher RPM's, adding more fuel. The engine will advance or activate additonal lobes on the cam, just as if you were to do a cam swap while driving.

well...in a way it is saving gas, it gives you more power when you want it, and when you dont want it its more conservative. thats the point of it...uses less gas when you want it to, instead of using more gas all the time.

not really. VTEC engages at higher RPMs, not whenever you want it to engage. it's not saving any gas at all.

i don't think you're getting the point. the VTEC system entails the use of the more aggressive cam. when the engine is below 6000 RPM, it's using the regular cam. it's like any other 4-cyl.

it dosent save any gas, because the lack of torque makes you rev into the vtec/vvti/i-vtec/ecotec/blah blah constantly

yes...im not getting the point. How do you know that the less aggressive cam is the same as the SOHC motors? It could be even less aggressive, so that it can use less gas. Dont make assumptions if you dont know the facts. I dont know the facts either, but its a good bet that the VTEC motors are more fuel efficient than the SOHC non-vtec motors. and do you know why? because the VTEC system is made to save gas.

Its purpose isnt to make horsepower, its to be more fuel efficient, along with all of the other acronyms (i-vtec, vvti, whatever.)

And cbrmike, i dunno about you but last time i drove a 4 cyl car i had no problem keeping it under 4k in normal driving.
