				looking to get bumper painted...where?

At the end of Sept, I will have the rear bumper off my SS and ready to finally go for paint. But i need to find a place that is reliable, quality work, and will not screw me over or disappoint me.

The bumper is extremely rare and possibly irreplaceable. It is an OEM GM rear bumper still in the black finish as how the parts come from GM.

I want it painted Light Pewter Metallic to match my SS. I cannot provide my car at the time of painting, just the bumper, but i could include the gas cap door to match it to if that'd work. Obviously the paint would need flex agent in it to prevent cracking.

Id want it finished by early December, so whoever paints it could have it for like 2 months.

How should I go about getting this done?

i just had a bad experience in the past with a neighbor who swore he was good at painting, had an old booth in a shop he owned... and the car came out way below what i expected, very disappointed. That was the TPI Monte SS i built for my ex.

If he works at a shop and knows his stuff, ok then id feel more comfortable about it. ill PM him tomorrow when i get a chance. I can paint decent myself, did my engine compartment and that came out great imo, but for an exterior bumper, im not gonna risk doing it myself.

Mizzoni's auto body on Rt. 46E in Lodi. I used to work there and Steve used to be an active member here before he sold his TA (1RawTA). They do great work and definitely wouldn't need or want your bumper for 2 months, should be a quick job.

Is it just a stock bumper for an SS car? If so any shop should be able to paint it in a day if there's no bodywork necessary. However I'll warn you now....the paint is not going to match. Even if they use a computer to color match to your gas cap....it'll still be off. The only proper way to do it is to blend the color from the bumper into the surrounding panels.

word to this statement... blend it to the quarter panels if you are going to keep the car.... worth the time and money to it.

On average, how much an i looking at to get it painted and blended then?

and it is a stock GM Export rear bumper, no body work needed at and and never ever done on it. Never been painted yet either. The export style just has no side markers, rear fog light openings, and a wider plate opening. i just don't want the paint cracking after a few months.

Id have to wait if i got it blended somewhere because the car isnt going anywhere i dont know while im away until dec. And then also id need it go to a place i fully trust.

Paul you taking on any new work? lol

Just make sure flex additive is added for the bumper

and a basic blend for the quarters

What area are you around?

Im in northern bergen county. I'll be in NJ for the last 2 weeks of sept only and then not again until about christmas time. The car does not go out really in the winter so driving it in Dec isnt an option. Would have to be trailered then.

matt was talken about me... i dont work out of my house.... at least not for paintwork... but i do work for a shop down in brick township.... i dont actually do the painting for the shop... although i can paint... its not my job title... but your more than welcome to bring the car down to get done... i cant do side work anymore due to the bad economy and they don't let us stay late anymore so it would have to go through the shop... gotta figure if no bodywork is needed on the bumper... probably looking at maybe $400-$500 to paint the bumper... blend the 1/4's would probably look at $200 extra for both.... maybe a little extra $$ to R/I (remove/install) the bumper... but if you came and talked about it maybe he could work with you... if you are interested just shoot me a PM...

Even if they use a computer to color match to your gas cap....it'll still be off. The only proper way to do it is to blend the color from the bumper into the surrounding panels.

 Yup. What he said.

I don't like breaking factory finish for bumper jobs but if you want them to match then you need to do that. Look at any GM vehicle though, the bumpers rarely match the rest of the car to begin with.

It should be around $350 or so to paint the bumper...another couple hundred for the 1/4's. Also, everyone keeps telling you to make sure they put flex in the paint....any shop that doesn't use flex additive on a bumper job shouldn't be painting cars, lol.

Yes, i have noticed many GM bumpers dont match the cars exactly anyway.

I also agree that i dont like messing with the factory finish. When i hit a deer with the car brand new(4 days old, 500 miles) I needed a fender and headlight. the shop that did the repairs called me and we talked about the whole blending thing and he didnt feel it was needed in that case, and had me come look at the car prior to releasing it. I checked it out and it looked fine. I can sometimes notice the hue difference at night under certain lighting but it doesnt bother me, if the bumper is as close, then id be more than happy. Also, eventually(like 4-5 years from now, and a new motor...lol) i may wanna paint the whole car over, same color, so if anything doesnt match 100% now, it will be fixed then. And in the end... just think ive been running around for close to 5 years now with a flat black bumper... anything will be an improvement, lol.

All those price quotes above look accurate to me. I still say blending it is the right way to go especially if it'll be 5 years til you paint the whole car. Unfortunately I'm not taking in any work at this time....full house with a line out the door. Good problem to have though.
