Thinking of going a different direction with my new toy, the car is currently Mystic Teal Blue, but will require some paint work. I'm considering two options, painting or vinyl wrapping. If anyone has seen the latest GM High Tech, the owner of that flat olive drab green LS1 Camaro with the big turbo had peaked my interest in the entire idea as it is a vinyl wrap job. I know Jake has tried the flat black route with his Camaro as well with mixed results, but I wanted to get some other people take on both routes.
Heres two examples I cam across on LS1Tech:

I'm worried that painting wouldn't blend very well.

Budget way would be wrapping if you do it yourself and it isn't permanent for resales. Also easy to repair if something happens or if you get a new body panel you don't have to worry about matching paint. I have been thinking about it for my car but I would paint mine only because I have access to a body shop. I love checking paint jobs out before they get cleared, they look pretty damn awesome. What color are you thinking about?

Have you found any places that sell the wrap? Does it come in sheets? I'm thinking of staying with that blue satin just like the Trans Am above, blue has always been one of my favorite colors. I'm also looking into the painting route as well, i've got a few friends left that do it, so I put out some feelers for a price.

I'd prefer to have it painted personally, I want everything perfect

Ask rich why satin is not a good option for a street car.

Imo it's trendy and will look dated in a few years.

How do you even go about washing a wrap too, just thought of that angle? You can't wax it or polish it.

Metallics won't look the same without gloss clear over them. It will look cool no doubt, just not the same as you'd think.

I believe most everyone buys a roll of vinyl and goes to town. Kirkevil has his sources, I'd ask him.

I'm doing my new ride in satin black paint. Gonna be a base coat/clear coat so I can still wax it for protection and ease of clean up. I need to be able to clean off bird poop and such. From what I hear, wraps are only good for 4-5 years on a daily driven type car, and they can be a beyotch to remove after long periods of time. I know the matte look ain't for every one, but I've been dying to do a car like this forever, so I'm in it for the long haul.

Years ago, if your car looked like this Flat Satin craze, everybody would say how come you never waxed your car and look how badly it has faded. When you see 2 Audi's side by side, the gloss finish just pops, but the satin is just different enough that some people say WOW. Sorta like the ricers that put lime yellow wheels on their blue cars and think that's sharp. It's your car and do to it whatever makes YOU satisfied, that's important.

You have to be very careful when cleaning these finishes. DO NOT rub too hard when washing/ or applying any wax. If you do, there will be an area where it will be shiny and there is no way to dull it back again to blend in with the rest of the paint.

satin can look cool... but its very tough to paint to have it come out really nice. so do your research and find somone really good at it if you go paint route. paint will be hard to keep super clean but any of the exterior satin paints are made to withstand the weather and road abuse. just cant really be waxed or buffed. If you get it painted get extra paint because if you crash or scratch it youll have to repaint an entire panel and it cannot be blended out so youll need to have extra paint of the exact mix you sprayed with. Paint will probably last longer

as said above the vinyl wrap probably wont last forever but is removable. But the satin color vinyls seem to breakdown and dry out from the sun alot faster than the shiny ones. They will crack in little peices. and removal will be a nightmare on such a big scale. hope this helps out a little and good luck with what ever you decide to do... that blue 5th gen camaro is pretty cool looken up there

			Google BMW frozen colors

Frozen black
Frozen grey
Frozen blue not sure of the exact.
Frozen bronze metallic

I have seen all but the blue in person and they are gorgeous. As far as the wrap most places that install the paint protection film can do it. But its not cheap by any means.

A satin som or similar burnt orange color with either bronze or gunmetal rims would look sick IMO...

I sprayed my brothers friends older cavalier. It came out great but again any body or paint blemishes will show. Buy a cheap harbor freight gun to spray it. Best 15 dollars you can spend. They are great for shooting primer too

I can't speak for the others, as I haven't seen them in person, but this color looked incredible in person.

Don't do Plasti-Dip, please.

Satin is in fact very tricky. Whatever comes out of the gun is what you're left with as you can't cut and buff it. You can either go with a flat single stage or run a standard base coat with a flat clear. The clear will give you better protection against the elements but as stated earlier you can't polish it or even rub it too hard when you wax it. I've had a flat clear on my Harley for about 4 years now and it's still holding up great. The bike has a nice satin finish to it and wax brings it up nicely without turning it to gloss.

I'm constantly going back and forth, and the more I think about it, the more an actual paint job is far out of reach at this time. I'd love to try something different, and i'm definitely leaning towards Vinyl wrap and attempting to tackle it myself.

Some of the 3M distributers market a 2Dr coup as 40ftx5ft, and a 4Dr Sedan at 50ftx5ft. at close to $500 for the larger 4Dr roll, which I think would better suit a F-Body. All of that for a fraction of the cost of a paint job.

Thoughts?

They've got all sorts of colors, and some that have struck my attention are Gloss Sterling Silver, Matte Grey Aluminum, Matte Silver, Gloss Burnt Orange, & Black Carbon Fiber (For the Sail Panel maybe?)

I've got to much time in Afghanyland.
