Garage Refresh

The garage has gotten pretty bad lately. I seem to have time to start many projects, finish some but never have time for the all important clean-up. Sound familiar to anyone? My Dad bought me an epoxy floor kit and I finally decided to get it done. Between emptying the garage, cleaning, powerwashing the floor, painting the walls and floor, this project took around 20 hrs and while it's not done, I think its coming along very nicely. The paint is getting more even as it cures and the base of the walls will be touched up. There is a pot time for the epoxy and using a brush on the brick surrounding the inside of the garage would have taken too long. Easier to touch up the wall than the floor.

The Big Changes:

- Removed large shelf in the front right of the garage. Cut, built and re-purposed it as an 8' workbench. Aside from the floor, this is my new favorite aspect of the garage.

- Powerwashed, etched and epoxy coated the floor

- Patched, sanded and painted the walls

- Removed and remounted existing tire rack. Mounted new one next to it.

- Setup wash station to the left of the garage entrance, right side is more setup with oils/fluids, etc.

- Compressor moved to front right corner. I will get a kit to plumb air to different spots around the garage.

- New/used tool box setup, one by the door, other by the front.

- I still need to finish organizing the rest of the stuff and get the stereo wired in the front.

Before/hoarder pics (My Dad arrived early on Friday to get started.....he was not pleased)

During - We decided now was the time to patch and paint the walls before doing the floor.

Getting there - Still more organizing to do.

Big thanks to Adam for waking me up on Sunday AM and helping out.

Egads! So that rear door DOES open!

Definitely am digging the renovations, Brian. Terrible memories of that crawlspace/underground dungeon still linger though; Please block that off pronto.

I wish my garage was as tidy as yours was to begin with. So far I lost two cars in mine... They are somewhere in there I think.

Thanks! The wife didn't understand the need for the TV but I told her it was an impulse purchase while she was asleep on the couch.

I was actually trying to make the meet but like usual, things take longer than intended.

Follow Adam's post. I have car part hoarding tendencies so he was helpful in making sure I "let go".

Thanks! I used the rustoleum kit. I unfortunately had to buy a third kit since the 2, single garage kits didn't cut it.

This type of setup will breed rats and roaches. Be wary.

You could offer him $5000 to clean it and it still wouldn't move.

It's a Walmart special with an extended warranty for $20. I figured if it blows up, I just get a new cheapo unit and move on.

Got the tire racks from Amazon (free shipping FTW). They are the Hyloft brand. Pretty easy install and they work well. I believe as of today, Amazon now charges tax for NJ purchases. It's a sad day.

When you get the bird running/driving, I will come over to do your garage

Came out looking nice.

What are the dimensions of your garage and how many layers did you put down? I am going to be doing the floor of mine in a few weeks hopefully and am trying to figure out how much I'll need. For the 100 something dollars it costs for each rustoleum kit, if I'll need 3 I may pick up the Epoxy-Coat special that does 500 sqft for $250 since I hear the water based stuff isnt as strong.

How do you like those overhead racks? I am about to buy a couple to toss over a work bench.

Thanks. I never measured the garage but I will do that and let you know. I had to use three of the 250 sq ft kits and I ended up having a little bit left over. If you are referring to the overhead hanging racks, they came with the house and I'd say they are OK, but not great. They are flimsy so the work fine for storing a few light items but not for much more. I'm actually considering removing them.

Each kit ran about $71 with tax.
